WWCX Cyclocross Festival and Women Celebration Race

The Washington Women of Cross (WWCX) is excited to announce the third annual WWCX Cyclocross Festival and Women Celebration Race on Saturday, August 29,  at Saint Edward State Park in Kenmore, WA.

The Washington Women of Cross Cyclocross Festival is an event to promote and provide an opportunity for women to learn about, experience and participate in cyclocross as well as celebrate the women who participate and race cyclocross at all levels.

This year the WWCX Festival proceeds will benefit Justice and Soul – a local non-profit dedicated to teaching job skills and supporting victims of human trafficking of young women abroad and in the U.S. (http://www.justiceandsoul.org/) and the new WWCX Junior Girls Cyclocross Scholarship Program to support girls’ local and national cyclocross racing participation and aspirations.

Take advantage of the online, pre-registration discount: https://www.bikereg.com/womencx

Men are welcome and encouraged to participate by volunteering or in racing the WWCX Supporter Men’s Race.

The WWCX Women Cyclocross Festival will include:

  • Cyclocross Expo featuring the Washington cyclocross community, local bike shops, health and fitness resources, and cycling products.
  • Women Cyclocross Skills Clinics presented by Cycle U and MD Endurance for beginner and intermediate experience levels facilitated by local elite women cyclocross racers and teams.
  • Mom Category Race presented by Voler to truly celebrate and recognize women who balance cyclocross with their other life roles. Mom categories will be based on age of their oldest child.
  • Women Celebration Cyclocross Race with a range of race categories for women and junior girls – beginner to elite. The only women-specific cyclocross races in the US!
  • WWCX Supporter Men’s Race
  • Family activities including a kids ride/play zone and a free kid’s race presented by Islabikes. Evergreen Balloons will also be onsite with incredible wearable balloon art!
  • Yoga In the Park for all levels
  • Refreshments and fuel by Motofish Coffee, Tacos El Guero and Sweet Wheels Ice Cream
  • Beer Garden presented by NW Peaks Brewery

The WWCX is an inspiration of the women’s cyclocross community as a means to organize and promote women and the sport of cyclocross for women.

Got Questions? We got answers!!!!

WWCX Festival FAQs

What if I have NEVER tried cyclocross before?

YOU are who this event is for!!  The WWCX Cyclocross Festival is all about welcoming women to experience and try cyclocross.  There is a Beginner Level clinic in the morning where you will learn about cyclocross, practice the basic skills and ride the race course.  If you want to try racing, there are Beginner and Mountain bike (where you can try a cyclocross race on a mountain bike) category races.  We welcome you to choose your experience – whether you participate in a clinic, race, spectate, or all three!

How long is a cyclocross race?

The cyclocross race course is a <2 mile loop within the park.  The goal is to do as many laps as you can in a certain time (30-45 minutes).  The race officials will determine how many laps a race will be based on the leaders first lap time and will display the remaining number of laps each time you pass the finish line.  If you see the officials ringing a cowbell and announcing “one to go!” it means the next lap will be your last lap of the race.

What if I don’t have a cross bike?

There will be a limited number of demo bikes available day-of. Sizes and quantities will be limited. Mountain bikes are welcome in the clinics and races.

What if I don’t have a team?

Come as you are!  You do not have to be a member of a club or team to participate in cyclocross.  If you want to meet local women teams, cycling clubs and organizations, they will be onsite as part of the Festival Expo and “Team Row.”

Can men participate?

Yes. Men can participate as volunteers and in the Men’s Race (and beer garden cheer squad).

Can kids participate?

Absolutely and encouraged! Kids events include the kids’ race and an Isla Bikes demo area.  Junior category races are also available for girls ages 8 – 18.

Is there babysitting for my kids in the Kid Zone?

The WWCX Festival Kid Zone is a place for families to enjoy cyclocross and cycling.  All kids must be accompanied by a parent in the Kid Zone.  There is no baby sitting or kid drop-off available in the Kid Zone.  Unsupervised kids will be considered prizes for the raffle.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, although they MUST be on a leash and supervised at ALL times within Saint Edward Park.  Please help us keep our great relationship with the Park and respect their leash law.  Or better yet, please leave furry friends at home instead where they will likely be much cooler.

Where can I register?

Online registration is encouraged with a pre-registration discount at www.bikereg.com/WomenCX .

Can I register day of?

Yes. Onsite registration will be available. However, there is a pre-registration discount at bikereg.com/womencx, and there are field limits on most events, so they could sell-out.

Can I participate in the clinic AND try a race?

Sure! Races are scheduled for later in the day to allow you the chance to try your new skills.  Plus, there is a discount rate for second ($10) and third (free!) Festival events, so you can do yoga and/or a second race too!  [Third event registration will be available on-site only]

What about parking?

We will have our own parking area this year.  Even better, if you park in our event parking area, you DO NOT need a Discover State Park Pass!!!  Carpools are highly encouraged, as parking is still very limited and not encouraged outside of our parking area to respect the experience of other park users.  Better yet, you can ride your bike there!  A Discover State Parks pass is required for each vehicle at St. Edward outside of our event parking area (which can be purchased onsite at Saint Edward Park).

Will there be host housing for out of town racers?

We’ll do our best. If you need host housing, please email volunteer@WomenCX.com  by August 15th  and we will try to match you with a host.   Nearby hotel accommodations can be found in nearby Canyon Park, Bothell, WA and include: Extended Stay, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn, and Hilton Garden Inn.

What if I get hungry?

Motofish Coffee will be onsite with fabulous coffee and baked goods.  The ever popular Tacos El Guero will be onsite with fabulous tacos and mexican food.  If you are over 21 years, you can also enjoy a beer in the NW Peaks Brewery Beer Garden.
